Why E.Q.R.S. Matters
In the event of an accident, the improper removal of a helmet can exacerbate injuries, particularly those involving the neck and spine. SHOEI’s E.Q.R.S. addresses this critical issue by enabling rescuers, including first aiders, emergency physicians, and rescue teams, to safely and efficiently remove the helmet. This feature ensures that a rider’s head and neck remain stabilised during the process, significantly reducing the risk of further injury.
How E.Q.R.S. Works
The E.Q.R.S. is integrated into the helmet’s cheek pads, allowing them to be easily detached with minimal effort. Once removed, the helmet can be safely taken off the rider’s head without disturbing their neck and head position.
- Red Straps for Easy Identification: Each cheek pad is equipped with a red strap sewn onto the outside. A sticker labelled "Emergency Use Only" is attached to the lower edge of the helmet, indicating the strap’s position.
- Accessible Design: The straps are designed for quick access, ensuring rescuers can operate the system without delay.
- User-Friendly Mechanism: The system requires no tools or special expertise, making it accessible to anyone at the scene of an accident.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Using E.Q.R.S.
1. Initial Preparation
- Open the helmet’s visor.
- Remove the victim’s glasses if necessary.
- Unfasten the chin strap and remove the wind deflector at the chin section.
2. Removing the Cheek Pads
- Locate the red strap and put your finger through it.
- Gently pull the strap to detach the cheek pad from its mounting while stabilising the helmet with your other hand.
- Completely remove the cheek pad from the lower side of the helmet.
- Repeat the process for the other cheek pad.
3. Removing the Helmet
- Ensure a second person stabilises the victim’s cervical spine throughout the procedure.
- Tilt the helmet cautiously over the victim’s nose, taking care not to let the head drop.
- Slowly lower the victim’s head onto the ground.
With the helmet removed, further life-saving measures can be safely performed.
